Levon Ter  Petrosyan, the first president of Armenia, in an article dated Dec. 6. 2020 (See Lousapatz Dec. 12 #1157) quotes the following from Vazken Manugyan’s very irresponsible speech at the Dec. 5  protest rally in Yerevan. Here is in part what Vazken Manugyan said.

«Նիկոլ Փաշինյանը մի բան էլ պէտք է հասկանայ, որ այս շարժումը, ստեղծուած է, ինքը ինչքան շուտ հրաժարական տայ կամաւոր այքան լաւ: Շարժումը չյաղթեց՛ գազազած ժողովուրդն իրեն կը յօշոտի: Թող հեռանայ կամաւոր, թէ ոչ զորով»

Loosely translated it reads.

“Nikol Pashinyan has to understand one thing also, that this movement is established, the sooner he resigns voluntarily, the better. If the movement does not succeed, the furious people will tear him apart. Let him resign voluntarily otherwise it will be done by force.”

This is nothing short of incitement of mob rule, encouragement of violence, and a threat to Pashinyan’s life. Worst yet, Vazken Manugyan is merely acting as the spokesperson of his discredited masters, namely, Robert Kocharyan, Serj Sargsyan, and their subservient “junior partner” ARF Dashnagtsutyun Party.

It is unfortunate that so far, I have not seen any condemnation of this threatening and despicable speech from any responsible person or any intellectual other than Levon Ter Petrossian. Who, rightfully, warns that this kind of statement might lead to civil war.

It is so disheartening to see that, after 29 years of independence, our political thinking has “matured” to a “mob rule” mentality. Yes, may God forbid, this kind of verbiage could lead to civil war, and yes, for that, we cannot blame anyone but ourselves, each one of us.

I thought of the following from an email that I sent to a forum on Dec. 2. 2020, might be appropriate to attach to this Monologue. Then we were discussing the current political situation in Armenia as well.

Here is in part what I wrote 

Since 1994 (without having signed a peace agreement), we, all of us, got carried on with illusions and myths and claimed victory.

Since then, a mere mention of “occupied territories” was considered to be treason.

Talking of giving lands, and war-ravaged un-occupied lands for security was considered to be treason

Even a mere talk of  “an agreement with mutual consent” was considered to be defeatist if not treasonous.

Needless to say in our recent history, in 1918, we had lost the war and gave up  Karabagh and Nakhijevan to Azerbaijan.

It was even worst in 1920 when after re-gaining Nakhijevan, Kars, Surmalu, (with the help of the British Army), we lost them again while still talking about — re-capturing Erzurum, Van, and more, and — dreaming about Severe Treaty “a worthless document”. (That is what Nobel Peace Lauriat Dr. Fridtjof Nansen called it in his book titled “Armenia and The Near East” page 315.)

(A fascinating book was written after a long trip to Soviet Armenia in June 1925 to study the possibility of irrigating the “so-called Sardarabad desert”  for the “settlement of Fifty thousand Armenian refugees scattered all over Europe”.  The book was published in 1927 in Norwegian, English, both in London, and in New York, and French, in Paris.)    

As for what is to be done now, especially by us in diaspora?.

First and foremost stay out of the internal politics of Armenia  

Open our hearts and — our pockets and help the orphans and grieving families,  help free the captured soldiers and civilians,  help the refugees to return to their homes.

Fortunately, that is exactly what the government of Armenia is trying to do to the best of its abilities, while at the same time, trying to tackle also the ravaging Covid 19 pandemic. We should be thankful and try to help them as much as possible.

As I said earlier the above email was written on Dec. 2. 2020. Here also I will quote part of an article written by Յարութ Տէր Դաւիթեան in “Lousapatz” (an online Armenian monthly magazine) #1157 Dec. 12. 2020, which I find very relevant to the issues discussed in the above email. Here is in part what Mr. Յարութ Տէր Դաւիթեան wrote.

“Այս յօդուածը գրէթէ աւարտած էինք, երբ այսօր կարդացինք Արցախի ազգային ժողովի նախագահ Արթիւր Թովմասեանի հետեւեալ կարեւոր տեղեկանքը”

«Բոլոր ժամանակներում բանակցային սեղանում դրուած բոլոր փաստաթղթերը՛ Քի Վեսթ, Փարիզեան սկզբունքներ, Մադրիդեան սկզբունքներ, Կազանեան փաստաթուղթը, Լաւրովի պլան, երբէք չեն արտահայտեր ոչ միայն Արցախի ժողովրդի արմատական շահերը, այլ նայեւ համայն հայութեան:

2016ի Ապրիլեան պատերազմից յետոյ ՀՀ երրորդ նախագահ Սերժ Սարգսեանը ԱՀ նախագահ Բակո Սահակեանի հետ հանդիպեցին 22 պատգամաւորների հետ: Սերժ Սարգսեանը յորդորեց մեզ համաձայնել եօթ շրջանների յանձմանը: Մենք առարկեցինք, որ Մադրիդեան սկզբունքները չեն արտայայտում հայ ժողովրդի արմատական շահերը:

Նա էլ ասաց՛ դուք բազմաթիւ անգամ լսել էք «Ղարս, Ղարս» երգը, եթէ հրաժարւում էք Մադրիդեան սկզբունքներից, ապա մի օր կը լսէք «Ստեփանակերտ, Սթեփանակերտ» երգը».

Thank God this warning did not come true during the disastrous 44-day war that Azerbaijan’s egomaniac Aliyev unleashed on Artsakh and its people.

We should be thankful for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s courageous and responsible decision (with the consent of the president of Artsakh) to sign the agreement (not treaty) that we all condemn. Yes, it took a lot of courage to accept full responsibility to sign such a humiliating agreement to save Stepanagerd and human lives.

Needless to say, our history is full of defeats, the last, and worst than this one, was the Treaty of Alexandrabol that ARF Dashnagtsutyun signed on Dec. 2. 1920. Needless to say, after two and a half years of independence with that treaty, we not only lost Artsakh, Zanqezur, Nakhijevan, Kars, Surmalu, etc. but also renounce the Sevre Treaty and became a sort of vassal state to Kemalist Turkey on a territory of about 10.000 sq. kilometer.

Here is what Simon Vratsian (the last prime minister of Armenia in 1920) wrote about Alexandrabol Treaty.

Դրօն թույլ տուեց , որ Ա. Խատիսեանը ստորագրէ թուրքերի հետ հաշտութեան դաշնագիրը Ալեքսանտրապոլում: Դրօն թույլ տուեց, անշուշտ, նախօրօք ունենալով Դաշնակցութեան հաւանութիւնը: Ուրիշ ելք չկար. կամ պէտք է ընդունուէր Քեազիմ Քարա Բէքիրի վերջնագիրը , կամ Երեւանն էլ պիտի գրաւուէր թուրքերի կողմից. Կարմիր բանակը հեռու էր եւ անզօր թուրքերի յառաջխաղացումը արգելելու: (Կեանքի Ուղիներով Դ. Հատոր Երրորդ Տպագրութիւն Պէյրութ 2007 էջ 191.

Here is another quote that reflects the ARF Party mentality at that time.

Here is in part what “Harach” (the official newspaper of ARF published in Yerevan) wrote in its editorial dated 23 Novembe1920.

Ինչպես հայտնի է՝ վաղը երեկոյան, Ալեքսանդրապոլում պիտի սկսվեն հայ-թուրքական հաշտութեան բանակցությունները:

Մեր ազգային քաղաքականությունը, որ մինչև այժմ եղել է անուղղելիորեն ռոմանտիկ, պետք է հիմնովին շրջի իր ղեկավարող սկզբունքները:

Ռեալ քաղաքականության գլխավոր սկզբունքն է՝ պահանջներիդ սահմանը սեփական ուժիդ չափն է:

Եթե այդպես վարվենք, մենք միշտ կշահենք, մեր ոտքի տակից երբեք չենք կորցնի հաստատուն հողը և հաշտության ընդհանուր լեզու կգտնենք թուրքերի հետ:

Մենք, որ օտարների ուժի վրա հույս դնելով շարունակ ձգտել ենք միանգամից ստեղծել մեծ Հայաստան, մեր այս շշմեցուցիչ պարտությունից հետո անմոռանալի առիթներ ունեցանք համոզվելու, թե մեզ համար որքան խաբուսիկ և վնասակար են այդ մեծ հույսերը:

Եվ եթե հայ ժողովուրդը վերջին համաեվրոպական պատերազմի ժամանակ չունենար ռուսական կողմնորոշում, այլ լիներ թուրքերի հետ առանց վերապահության, ամենայն հավանականությամբ, նա խուսափած կլիներ կոտորածներից և նրա վիճակը վրացիներից էլ լավ կլիներ

It is said that history repeats itself. I do not think this is true. It is men and women who make history according to the circumstances of their time and their wisdom. Let us hope that this time, in our time, wise men and women will be able to overcome emotions, and guide Armenia through these difficult times where the constitutional rule of law will prevail.
